Their claim: the AI image generators were trained on billions of copyrighted images scraped from the internet without consent, compensation, or credit. On December 27, 2023, The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging that millions of copyrighted articles were used to train ChatGPT. The Times sought "billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages" and demanded the destruction of GPT models trained on its content.
