Black Forest Labs Introduces AI-Powered Flux.1 Tools for Advanced Image Editing

Black Forest Labs released four new AI-powered image editing tools for its Flux.1 AI model last week. These tools are based on separate models designed for specific image editing tasks, providing users with granular control over their output images while preserving key elements and experimenting with different styles. The editing tools are available separately as developer models in open access, as well as pro versions.
Flux.1 Image Editing Tools Released
In a blog post, the company detailed the four new image editing tools for the Flux.1 AI model. Developers can access these tools through separate models within the Flux Dev License, while users can access the full version through the BFL API.
- Flux.1 Fill: This is an inpainting and outpainting tool that allows users to edit details within an image or expand the boundaries using text prompts and a binary mask. The company claims the pro version outperforms competing tools like Ideogram 2.0. The developer version is available on Hugging Face and GitHub, while the pro version can be accessed via the BFL API.
- Flux.1 Depth and Flux.1 Canny: These tools enable structural conditioning during image transformations. The Depth tool preserves the structure of the generated image using depth maps, maintaining it while users make text-guided edits. Similarly, the Canny tool preserves the structure by accessing the output’s canny edges, making it helpful for retexturing-based edits.
The company claims that these tools outperform similar offerings from competitors like Midjourney and InstantX. The full version offers maximum performance, while the Low-rank adaptation (LoRA) version makes deployment easier for developers.
- Flux.1 Redux: This tool allows users to generate image variations based on an input image. Black Forest Labs states that the tool can reproduce the image with slight variations, which can then be further refined. It also allows for image restyling via prompts. This tool is supported by the Flux1.1 [pro] Ultra, the company’s flagship image generation model. Model weights are available here.
These tools enhance Black Forest Labs' AI-driven image editing capabilities, offering powerful features for professional users.
